President Lee Jae-myung said on the 11th regarding the large-scale personal data breach at online streaming service TVING that authorities must swiftly and accurately determine the circumstances of the incident and hold those responsible strictly accountable under law and principles.

President Lee issued the instruction during a meeting with senior secretaries and aides he presided over at Cheong Wa Dae that day, noting that public anxiety and concern are mounting over the leak of more than 40 million pieces of personal data.

President Lee urged authorities to uncover the full facts, stating that the company reportedly failed to take necessary measures despite identifying security vulnerabilities in advance.

He repeatedly emphasized that thorough efforts must also be made to prevent secondary crimes exploiting the leaked personal information.

President Lee then said that it is time to elevate the security capabilities and awareness of our entire society from the perspective of national security.

He went on to instruct officials that authorities must enhance the effectiveness of sanctions so that the burdens borne from an incident are incomparably greater than any gains made from neglecting privacy protection, and called for promptly formulating comprehensive countermeasures based on interagency cooperation to rectify the misguided perception of viewing security as an unnecessary cost.
