Famous Japanese mystery writer Keigo Higashino. / Yonhap

Keigo Higashino, a Japanese mystery writer well known for bestsellers such as Miracles of the Namiya General Store and The Devotion of Suspect X, has passed away from colon cancer.

According to local media including NHK on the 27th, writer Higashino passed away on the 23rd after battling colon cancer. He was 68 years old.

Born in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, he graduated from Osaka Prefecture University and made his debut in 1985 at the age of 27 with After School. This work won the Edogawa Rampo Prize, a top-authority mystery fiction newcomer award hosted by the Mystery Writers of Japan.

He left behind numerous works centering on mysteries, and gained popular popularity with the Galileo series, a mystery story about a genius physicist whose first installment was published in 1998.

He was also loved for works such as The Devotion of Suspect X and Into the White Night, which were each adapted into films in Korea and Japan.

Miracles of the Namiya General Store remained in the top ranks of bestsellers in Korea for several years, recording cumulative sales of more than 1 million copies.
