Director Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice and the Netflix animation K-pop Demon Hunters have secured major nominations for next year’s Golden Globe Awards, bolstering Korea’s presence on the global awards stage.

According to the list released on December 8 (local time), No Other Choice was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, as well as Best Non-English Language Film. Lee Byung-hun, who plays the protagonist Mansu, earned a nomination for Best Actor in the Musical or Comedy category, competing against Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), George Clooney (J. Kelly), Jesse Plemons (Bugonia), and Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme). Park, however, did not make the list of nominees for Best Director.

Meanwhile, K-pop Demon Hunters, hailed as one of Netflix’s biggest global hits of the year, was nominated for Best Animated Feature, Best Original Song (“Golden”), and the Golden Globe Box Office Achievement Award. It will compete with Disney’s Zootopia 2 and Elio, Japan’s Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, Arco, Little Amelie, and others.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle… led this year’s nominations with nine nods, including Best Motion Picture and Best Actor. Bugonia—the Hollywood remake of the Korean cult classic Save the Green Planet!—secured nominations in three categories: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor, and Best Actress (Emma Stone).

Netflix’s Squid Game Season 3, however, failed to make the Golden Globe shortlist for TV drama categories.

The Golden Globes, considered a precursor to the Academy Awards, present separate awards for film and television, with distinct categories for Musical or Comedy and Drama. The 83rd ceremony will take place on January 11 in Los Angeles.
