Park Chan-wook’s film No Other Choice has been selected as South Korea’s entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2026 Academy Awards, the Korean Film Council announced Wednesday.

The selection committee cited the film’s “solid cinematic craftsmanship, its timely theme of layoffs, strong performances by acclaimed actors, and the backing of a capable North American distributor” as reasons for the choice. The committee added that the film “turns a global tragedy into ironic humor in a way that could resonate strongly with the Academy.”

The international feature category is open to films produced outside the United States, with each country allowed to submit only one entry. Last year, South Korea submitted Seoul’s Spring.

No Other Choice follows the struggles of a laid-off father who resorts to desperate measures to find new employment. The film premiered on August 29 in competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, where it received widespread praise from international critics. Several foreign outlets have already speculated that it could be a strong contender at the Oscars next March.
