On August 23, Naver talked about removing some services with plagiarism allegations in a joint committee discussion
It was pointed out that local 'dinosaur portal' Naver is closing down unprofitable businesses in order to minimize government regulations over Naver's monopolistic practices.
On August 19, Korea Venture Association revealed that Naver plans to decide whether to stop providing some of its application services, such as fashion SNS app "Wannabe", restaurant information app "Wingspoon", alarm app "Naver Good Morning", and "Naver Memo" on August 23.
These apps were criticized for copying ideas from small venture firms, damaging the internet ecosystem. Nevertheless, they turned out to be white elephants because they weren't profitable nor popular.
For example, the number of "Wannabe" users reached to 202,409 in April when it was released however, dropped rapidly to 74,992 in July. Nearly 130,000 users were reduced in four months. Due to its poor performance, the app had to be given up anyway, regardless of criticism. Before its release, some pointed out that it copied a fashion social networking service of venture firm StyleShare.
"Wingspoon", which provides location-based information on restaurants just like "Menupan.com" doesn't many any profit at all because it doesn't receive commission from restaurants.
"Naver Memo" and "Naver Good Morning" were criticized for copying venture firms Wizard Works' "SomNote" and Malang Studio's "Alarm Mon" respectively.
