Choi Moon-Ki from Korea's Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning |
On July 25, Minister Choi Moon-Ki from Korea's Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, attended a luncheon in Gyeonggi-do and said, "Some of Naver's business have violated the fair-trade law. Naver should take legal responsibility for those cases. The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) will take measures for this."
Minister Choi said, "When FTC completes taking measures, the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning will set a plan for the coexistence of portals and other related companies. We will be focusing on their win-win partnership rather than reducing internet regulations as much as possible."
However, the minister backed down regarding the legal regulation measures and said, "The National Assembly will draw up regulation measures."
It can be interpreted that the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, which is the government's department of ICT promotion, needs to approach the Naver issues along with internet industry promotion and regulation issues unlike the Fair Trade Commission.
