On July 23, NHN CEO Kim Sang-Hun attended "Field meeting for fair and mutually beneficial internet business" held at Korea Mobile Internet Business Association (MOIBA) located in Shinsa-dong, Seoul. |
It was said that the government plans to actively operate its research team for improvement of internet market system and hold a meeting for mutual development cooperation for internet market.
The government has been operating a research team for internet search service since May and it was known that it will establish a market guideline by the end of next month.
Yoon Jong-Rok, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning (MSIP) told Asia Today during the interview prior to Saenuri Party's "Field meeting for portals' fair and coexistence" held at Korea Mobile Internet Business Association (MOIBA) located in Shinsa-dong, Seoul, on July 23.
In response to portals' monopoly and unfair actions, Vice Minister Yoon said, "The government will actively operate a meeting for mutual development cooperation for internet market and a research team for improvement. The government has been operating a research team for internet search service since May and will establish a government guideline by the end of next month. Depending on the cases, the government will properly seek for regulations, guidelines, and self-regulating methods."
It was also said that the Fair Trade Commission, who has been thoroughly investigating 'dinosaur' portal Naver's unfair and monopolistic actions in the internet market since May, is seeking for a powerful competition act to foster a fair competition in the internet innovation market.
It seems like the government started taking actions in earnest to eradicate 'super privileged' Naver's monopoly.
The Saenuri Party is expected to establish a law to regulate Naver's monopolistic tyranny in the National Assembly in September.
On the meeting hosted by Saenuri Party for Park Geun-Hye government's creative economy and economic democratization, floor leader Choi Kyung-Hwan said, "The party and the government will actively review and continue to improve related laws and systems on the upcoming regular session of the National Assembly in a fair and effective manner."
Floor leader Choi said, "Portals are holding editorial right of the press. If related industry insiders tell us their thoughts regarding portals' press function, we will provide a systematic reform measure."
NHN CEO Kim Sang-Hun said, "Naver has a wide range of companions including internet service providers, internet shopping malls, press, ventures, and start-up companies who provide many different services and contents. We will listen carefully and provide ways for coexistence through arrangements."
