The presidential office appointed political commentator Kim Sung-wan as its new spokesperson on Sept. 21, filling a post that had been vacant for about five months since the previous spokesperson resigned in late April. The appointment restores the presidential spokesperson team to a three-person lineup.

According to the presidential office, Kim began reporting for work at Cheong Wa Dae on Sept. 21 and officially started his duties.

Kim previously worked as a reporter for media-focused outlet Media Today before moving into broadcasting, where he hosted current affairs radio programs. Until recently, he had been active as a political commentator on television and other media.

The spokesperson post had remained vacant since former spokesperson Jeon Eun-su resigned in late April to run in the parliamentary by-election in Asan, South Chungcheong Province.

With Kim’s appointment, the presidential spokesperson team once again consists of Senior Spokesperson Kang Yu-jung, Spokesperson Kim Sung-wan and Deputy Spokesperson Ahn Gwi-ryeong.

Speaking to reporters after arriving for work, Kim said, “I feel a heavy sense of responsibility.”

“As President Lee Jae-myung has said, I will work with humility to communicate more closely with the public,” he added.
