As the Kospi index surged on July 21, a sidecar halted program buy orders on the South Korean main bourse.

According to the Korea Exchange, program buy orders were temporarily suspended on the Kospi market at 12:41 p.m.

A buy sidecar on the Kospi is invoked when the benchmark Kospi 200 futures contract moves up by 5% or more from the previous day's closing price and holds that gain for at least one minute.

The Kospi index staged a sharp rally driven by major semiconductor heavyweights. As of 1:00 p.m., the index was trading at 6,817.28, up 4.62% from the previous session. At the same time, Samsung Electronics was trading at 262,000 won, up 7.38%, while SK Hynix jumped 6.35% to trade at 1,876,000 won.
