A subcontractor worker died after falling at a construction site for the Shinansan Line, being built by POSCO E&C. This marks another major accident following fatalities last year at the company’s Shinansan Line sites in Gwangmyeong and Yeouido.

According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor on June 10, the accident occurred at 5:26 p.m. the previous day at the Shinansan Line 3-2 double-track railway site in Gwanak District, Seoul. A worker in his 30s fell about 15 meters through an opening while expanding it for cable tray installation.

Authorities immediately ordered work to stop and launched an investigation into the cause. The ministry is also probing potential violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.

This is the third fatal accident at Shinansan Line sites under POSCO E&C. In April last year, a tunnel collapse in Gwangmyeong killed one worker and injured another. In December, a subcontractor pump truck operator died when rebar bundles collapsed near Yeouido Station.

Following the latest accident, POSCO E&C issued an apology, expressing condolences to the deceased and his family, and promising measures to prevent recurrence.

The company stated, “We pray for the deceased and extend our deepest condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family. Despite conducting safety inspections with external experts across all Shinansan Line sites, we painfully realize it was not enough.”

It added, “We will take every possible measure, including halting work until safety is fully secured. We will do our utmost to support the bereaved family and ensure such incidents never happen again, with all employees taking full responsibility.”
