The Devil Wears Prada 2, returning 20 years after the original film, is poised to claim the top spot at the Korean weekend box office.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing system on Thursday morning, the sequel ranked first in real-time advance ticket sales with a reservation rate of 19.7%, equivalent to around 40,000 tickets sold.
Set once again in New York’s fashion industry, the film follows legendary magazine editor Miranda, played by Meryl Streep, and veteran editor Andy, portrayed by Anne Hathaway. The original 2006 hit centered on the fierce survival battle inside fictional fashion magazine Runway.
The sequel attracted 31,482 moviegoers on Wednesday alone, bringing its cumulative audience total to 1.02 million and surpassing the one-million mark just nine days after release.
Hollywood animated feature Super Mario Galaxy, based on the popular video game franchise, ranked third with a reservation rate of 16.5%, or about 34,000 tickets. Released on April 29 alongside “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” the film previously topped the box office during the recent holiday period thanks to strong family attendance over Children’s Day weekend.
Despite falling behind in reservations, “Super Mario Galaxy” still maintains a higher cumulative audience total of 1.13 million viewers.
Korean horror film Salmokji slipped to fifth place in advance bookings with 8.2%, but its cumulative audience had already reached 2.87 million as of Wednesday, making it highly likely to surpass the three-million milestone this weekend.
Meanwhile, Michael, a biographical film about the late “King of Pop” Michael Jackson, ranked second with a reservation rate of 17.9%, signaling strong box office momentum ahead of its Korean release on May 12.
The film has already generated a global sensation, grossing $443.84 million worldwide, including North America, in just 13 days of release.
