The Blue House said Thursday it will continue pursuing a consistent policy of peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula after North Korea formally revised its constitution to define the two Koreas as separate states.

In a statement released to the media, the presidential office said it would comprehensively review developments related to North Korea’s constitutional amendment while maintaining its peace-oriented policy approach.

North Korea recently amended its constitution to specify only the northern territory in its territorial clause and officially define South and North Korea as separate countries.

The revision also removed language related to national reunification that had been included in the previous constitution. Phrases such as “struggle to achieve national reunification under the principle of great national unity” were deleted, effectively formalizing Pyongyang’s shift in policy toward South Korea at the constitutional level.

Reports also indicated that the revised constitution explicitly stipulates for the first time the authority of Kim Jong Un to use nuclear weapons.
