The People Power Party on Wednesday unanimously reaffirmed Rep. Song Eon-seok as its floor leader after he had earlier expressed his intention to resign.
Rep. Shin Dong-wook, a senior party official, told reporters after a general meeting of party lawmakers at the National Assembly that most members responded with applause when it was suggested that Song should serve out his term.
“They agreed that it is appropriate for Floor Leader Song to fulfill his duties until the end of his term,” Shin said.
Song had skipped a Supreme Council meeting earlier in the day and was also absent at the start of the general meeting. After lawmakers endorsed him through a confidence vote, they persuaded him to attend the session.
Shin explained that Song’s earlier resignation offer was not due to a major political issue but stemmed from misunderstandings surrounding the proposed administrative integration of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province.
“There were misunderstandings because Floor Leader Song was directly involved in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk integration issue,” Shin said, adding that the party’s position on the matter was clarified on Wednesday, which likely eased Song’s concerns.
Song, who represents Gimcheon in North Gyeongsang Province, had previously announced his intention to step down amid internal disagreements over a special act on Daegu-Gyeongbuk administrative integration. Some party lawmakers have strongly supported the integration plan.
Meanwhile, lawmakers from the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region discussed the proposed special act on Wednesday and found majority support for the measure. They plan to urge the party leadership to process the bill within the February extraordinary session of the National Assembly.
