South Korea has been officially selected to host the next UN Ocean Conference (UNOC) in 2028, following the adoption of a resolution at the UN General Assembly.

The UN General Assembly convened a plenary session on Dec. 9 in New York and voted on the resolution designating Korea as the venue of the upcoming conference. The measure passed with 169 votes in favor and two against (the United States and Argentina), with no abstentions.

Held every three years, the UN Ocean Conference is the highest-level UN gathering dedicated to oceans. Its mission is to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on conserving marine environments and ensuring the sustainable use of ocean resources. Each conference is jointly hosted by a developed country and a developing country.

For the 2028 conference, Korea will co-host with Chile. Ahead of the main event in Korea, Chile will hold a high-level preparatory meeting in 2027.
