On July 18, the special counsel team led by Min Jung-ki launched a compulsory search of Unification Church headquarters in Gapyeong and Seoul in connection with influence-peddling allegations involving shaman Jeon Sung-bae and First Lady Kim Kun-hee.
Prosecutors and investigators from the special counsel’s office raided the church's main compound in Seorak-myeon, Gapyeong County, Gyeonggi Province, and its Seoul branch in Yongsan District early Friday morning.
The probe is looking into suspicions that the Unification Church, through Jeon, delivered illicit gifts and policy requests to the First Lady. Jeon allegedly received a diamond necklace and a Chanel bag from a church official—identified as Yoon, then head of the church’s global headquarters—between April and August 2022, and passed them on to Kim as gifts along with policy requests.
Before the case was handed over to the special counsel, Jeon reportedly admitted during a prosecution probe that he received the items but claimed to have lost all of them.
