President Lee Jae-myung ordered on the 24th, in relation to the disappearance of Jang Mi-ran and allegations of a false case closure by the police, a thorough investigation into the entire police inquiry process, as well as an overhaul of the overall case closure, command, and supervisory systems.
According to Senior Presidential Spokesperson Kang Yu-jung, after being briefed on the news that a body presumed to be Jang was found on that day, President Lee expressed deep despair and sorrow over the discovery of the body presumed to be Jang, and issued these instructions.
President Lee instructed, "Order the police to thoroughly uncover the truth behind the entire case handling process and inspect case closure procedures and the entire command and supervisory system," adding, "Prepare the police's own reform plans, including institutional improvements or fundamental revitalization measures."
Earlier, Jang's family filed a missing person report on May 15 and filed another report on the 19th of last month.
However, Senior Police Constable A of Jeju Seobu Police Station, who received the initial report, is under investigation on charges of falsely closing the case while pretending that Jang had been found.
According to the Jeju Provincial Police Agency, police found a body presumed to be Jang in a palm tree field in Hallim-eup, Jeju City, on that day.
The police are investigating to confirm the exact identity and the cause of death.
