A North Korean soldier was taken into custody on the central front last night, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced on the 24th. The soldier has reportedly expressed a desire to defect to South Korea.
"Our military secured a North Korean soldier on the central front during the night of the 23rd," the JCS stated. "Relevant authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the specific details."
The detained soldier has reportedly made a clear statement of intent to defect. Military and intelligence agencies are now verifying the soldier's assigned unit, military rank, and the exact circumstances of the border crossing.
If this defection is officially confirmed, it will mark the fourth cross-border defection by North Korean citizens since the launch of the Lee Jae-myung administration. It also represents the second military defection under the current administration, following an incident last October when another North Korean soldier crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) on the central front to defect.
