The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) is launching an initiative to secure Artificial Intelligence safety by cooperating with Anthropic, a global AI research and development company, to evaluate autonomous AI agents and address other safety challenges.
The MSIT announced on June 18 that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Anthropic to foster cooperation in AI safety and cybersecurity.
The MOU serves as a substantive follow-up measure to the cooperation plans discussed last February during the 2026 AI Impact Summit India, where Deputy Prime Minister Bae Kyung-hoon met with Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic.
Through this agreement, the MSIT intends to analyze the profound impact of AI on cyber attacks and defenses. At the same time, the ministry will solidify its cooperative framework with Anthropic to ensure frontier AI safety by evaluating AI model safety and abuse risks in the context of the Korean language, as well as conducting red-teaming evaluations on autonomous AI agents.
In the field of AI safety, South Korea’s Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (AISI) and Anthropic agreed to actively collaborate on securing AI safety, including safety assessments of AI models and autonomous AI agents. In the cybersecurity sector, the two sides will cooperate on identifying AI vulnerabilities across various domains, including finance, and swiftly sharing expertise and relevant information on cyber threats.
"Korea is one of Anthropic's most important markets in the Asia-Pacific region, and the signing of this MOU holds great significance as it lays the groundwork for long-term cooperation in Korea," Chris Chauri, Global Head of Anthropic, said. "Partnering with government agencies that share the value of developing safe and responsible AI is core to Anthropic’s operations."
Meanwhile, Anthropic officially opened its Korean office on June 17, making South Korea its fourth location in an Asian nation, following Japan, India, and Australia.
