Explosions were reported early Wednesday near southern Iranian port cities close to the Strait of Hormuz as ceasefire negotiations between the United States and Iran appeared to face difficulties in their final stages.

According to Iranian media outlets including Fars News Agency and Reuters, three explosion sounds were heard around 1:30 a.m. near the eastern area of Bandar Abbas, a major Iranian port city in the country’s south.

Iranian air defense systems were reportedly activated for several minutes following the blasts. Similar sounds were also reported near Sirik and Jask, both located close to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

The reported explosions marked the first such incident in southern Iran since May 25.

Iranian authorities said they had launched follow-up investigations to determine the cause of the explosions, though the exact location and nature of the incident had not yet been confirmed.

Reuters reported that the U.S. military carried out airstrikes on Iranian military facilities and intercepted drones after determining that they could pose threats to American forces and commercial maritime traffic in the region.

United States Central Command stated that it had conducted strikes on certain targets in southern Iran near the Strait of Hormuz, citing the right to self-defense.
