The Korean National Police Agency announced on May 22 that it is tracking down the authors of viral social media posts disguised as legitimate news articles that falsely claim the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement was orchestrated under orders from North Korea, promising a stern and uncompromising legal response.

In an official statement released to the press, the National Police Agency revealed, "We are currently conducting a tracking investigation into multiple online posts labeling the May 18 movement as a riot, alongside synthesized news-style articles—which appear to have been generated using artificial intelligence—alleging direct North Korean directives and spy intervention."

"We will strictly adhere to a zero-tolerance principle, aggressively investigating all false information surrounding the historic May 18 event while simultaneously coordinating with relevant regulators to request the immediate deletion and blocking of these malicious feeds," a senior police official emphasized. "We intend to respond with maximum legal weight against the dissemination of fraudulent claims to ensure the historical integrity and profound meaning of the Gwangju Democratization Movement are not defaced."
