The animated blockbuster Super Mario Galaxy emerged as the top performer at the Korean box office during the Labor Day holiday, drawing massive family audiences.

According to the Korean Film Council on May 4, the film attracted 575,508 viewers from May 1 to 3, securing the No. 1 spot for the weekend. It was followed by The Devil Wears Prada 2 with 482,833 viewers and Salmokji with 398,053 viewers.

While the Mario film led during the holiday period, The Devil Wears Prada 2 still holds a slight edge in cumulative attendance. Both films were released on April 29, with total audiences reaching 736,039 for Prada 2 and 685,988 for Super Mario Galaxy as of May 3.

However, industry observers expect the Mario film to overtake its rival in total admissions following Children’s Day on May 5, when family audiences typically surge. As of the morning of May 4, the film led advance ticket sales with a dominant 41.8% share, far ahead of Prada 2, which recorded 19.2%.

Based on the globally popular video game franchise, the film follows plumber-turned-hero Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) and his brother Luigi (Charlie Day) as they battle Bowser (Jack Black) to save the galaxy.

Meanwhile, The Devil Wears Prada 2 continues the story of fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) and journalist Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), who reunite to navigate challenges in a rapidly changing media landscape.

The Korean horror film Salmokji has also posted strong results, surpassing 2.63 million cumulative viewers since its release on April 8. The figure exceeds its break-even point by more than three times, making it the most successful Korean horror film released since the COVID-19 pandemic. It is also expected to surpass the box office record of Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, which drew 2.68 million viewers.
