Jung Cheong-rae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, is facing growing political scrutiny after proposing that his party take all standing committee chair positions in the National Assembly, a move some interpret as part of a broader strategy to secure reelection as party leader.

While the party has publicly justified the plan as necessary to speed up legislation amid what it describes as non-cooperation from the People Power Party, critics argue that the proposal may be aimed at consolidating internal power.

According to political observers, controlling all committee chair positions would significantly expand the party leader’s influence over key appointments, including committee leadership and floor-level roles. This, in turn, could strengthen Jung’s political base and give him an advantage in the next party convention.

A Democratic Party official said that while the justification appears reasonable, the underlying intention may be to lay the groundwork for Jung’s bid to retain leadership.

However, the move also carries political risks. Opposition lawmakers have strongly criticized the proposal, warning that it could revive accusations of one-party dominance and “legislative dictatorship.”

Lawmakers from the People Power Party, including Rep. Na Kyung-won, condemned the plan, calling it a “clear declaration of authoritarianism” and accusing the ruling party of sidelining the opposition.

Similar concerns were raised based on past experience. In 2020, the Democratic Party secured all standing committee chair positions during the second half of the Assembly term, but later faced political backlash. The move was widely cited as one of the factors contributing to a series of electoral defeats, including the 2021 Seoul and Busan by-elections, the 2022 local elections and the presidential race.

Some within the Democratic Party have also expressed caution. A second-term lawmaker noted that repeating the same strategy could again trigger public backlash, emphasizing the need for a more measured approach.

As debate intensifies, Jung’s proposal is likely to remain a key point of contention in the political landscape ahead of upcoming elections.
