President Lee Jae-myung on March 22 nominated Shin Hyun-song, head of the Monetary and Economic Department at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), as the next governor of the Bank of Korea.

The nomination was announced by presidential spokesperson Lee Kyu-yeon during a briefing.

“Amid growing global economic uncertainty triggered by the Middle East situation, Shin is the right person to achieve both price stability and sustainable economic growth,” the spokesperson said.

Shin, 67, is a native of Daegu and holds both a master’s and a doctorate in economics from the University of Oxford. He previously served as a professor at Princeton University, a financial advisory council member at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and a resident scholar at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He also served as presidential secretary for international economic affairs in 2010 before joining the BIS in 2014, where he held key roles including economic adviser and head of research, and currently leads its monetary and economic department.

The current Bank of Korea governor, Rhee Chang-yong, is set to complete his term on April 20. Shin will officially assume office following a parliamentary confirmation hearing and presidential appointment.
