Actors Lee Seo-jin and Ko Asung will take the stage in Uncle Vanya from May 7 to 31 at the Signature Hall of LG Arts Center Seoul.
The production marks Lee’s theatrical debut in his 27th year since debut. He will play the titular character Vanya, a man who constantly voices dissatisfaction and disillusionment with life yet retains affection for his family and an enduring sincerity toward his dreams.
Ko will also step onto the theater stage for the first time in 20 years since her film debut in The Host. She will portray Sonya, a character who stands by Vanya in protecting their home and looks toward the next generation.
Veteran stage actors will join the cast, including Yang Jong-wook of the collective Yangson Project, Kim Soo-hyun — known for powerful performances in Richard II and Hamlet — and Cho Young-kyu, recipient of the 61st Dong-A Theatre Award for acting. Actors Lee Hwa-jung, Min Yoon-jae and Byun Yoon-jung will also appear.
Produced by LG Arts Center following its earlier productions of The Cherry Orchard and Hedda Gabler, Uncle Vanya is based on the play by Russian literary giant Anton Chekhov. The work delicately portrays ordinary individuals whose lives are shaken when they stray from the familiar rhythms of daily existence.
