Actress Bae Doona has been appointed as a jury member for the Competition section of the 76th Berlin International Film Festival, becoming the third Korean to serve on the competition jury at the festival.
According to festival organizers on Tuesday, Bae will join jury president Wim Wenders and other panelists in selecting winners of the Golden Bear, the festival’s top honor, along with other major awards. The festival runs from Feb. 12 to 22, with 22 films competing for the Golden Bear, including Queen at Sea starring Juliette Binoche.
Bae’s appointment marks a significant milestone for Korean cinema. She follows actress Lee Young-ae, who served as a competition jury member in 2005, and director Bong Joon-ho, who joined the jury in 2015.
This year’s Berlinale will also showcase several Korean films across different sections. Hong Sang-soo’s The Day She Returned has been invited to the Panorama section, Jung Ji-young’s My Name Is to the Forum section, and Yoo Jae-in’s On the Way to Erase will screen in the Generation 14plus section.
The participation of both Korean artists and films highlights Korea’s continued presence and influence at one of the world’s most prestigious international film festivals.
