Actors Park Bo-gum and Joo Won will star in director Kim Han-min’s upcoming historical action film, The Sword: A Legend of the Red Wolf.

Kim, who previously set box-office records with War of the Arrows, returns with a large-scale period action project centered on sword-based combat from the Goguryeo era.

According to the film’s publicist on Thursday, The Sword: A Legend of the Red Wolf is set in 668, shortly after the fall of Goguryeo, and unfolds in Liaodong Fortress. The story follows a man who has lost his memory and been reduced to slavery, only to enter a brutal gladiatorial tournament fought over a legendary sword.

Park Bo-gum plays Chilseong, the amnesiac warrior at the heart of the story, marking a bold transformation in his acting career. Joo Won portrays Gyepil Haryeok, a cold and formidable Turkic warrior who stands in direct opposition to Chilseong. Veteran actor Jung Jae-young joins the cast as Heuksugang, the leader of the Goguryeo restoration army and Chilseong’s mentor.

The supporting cast includes Lee Sun-bin as Maya, a member of the restoration forces, and BIBI (Kim Hyeong-seo) as Injeong, Heuksugang’s daughter.

The film has entered full-scale production with a planned release next summer. Kim said the project integrates artificial intelligence technologies from the R&D stage to create dynamic gladiatorial sword action, depicting clashes among 16 different tribes with distinct martial arts and tactics.

“If War of the Arrows captured the speed and spirit of the bow, this film aims to convey the sharp yet heavy energy of the sword cutting through the chaos following Goguryeo’s collapse,” Kim said. He added that the film seeks to introduce a new Korean-style action hero capable of captivating audiences across Asia and beyond.
