Coupang on Monday announced a customer compensation package totaling 1.685 trillion won in response to a large-scale personal data breach, offering purchase vouchers worth 50,000 won per affected user.

The compensation applies to 33.7 million accounts that received data breach notifications in late November, including customers who have since closed their accounts. Coupang said the move reflects its responsibility to restore customer trust after the incident.

Harold Rogers, interim CEO of Coupang Korea, said, “All Coupang employees are deeply reflecting on how much concern and anxiety the recent personal information leak has caused our customers,” adding that the company prepared the compensation plan as a responsible measure for customers.

Under the plan, each eligible customer will receive four single-use purchase vouchers totaling 50,000 won: 5,000 won for Coupang products including Rocket Delivery, Rocket Direct Import, Seller Rocket and the marketplace; 5,000 won for Coupang Eats; 20,000 won for Coupang Travel; and 20,000 won for Alux.

Coupang plans to distribute the vouchers starting Jan. 15 next year, with no distinction between Wow members and non-members. The company will notify eligible customers sequentially via text message, and vouchers can be checked and applied through the Coupang app when making purchases.

Rogers said the company would take the incident as an opportunity to reaffirm its customer-first philosophy. “Coupang will practice customer centricity from the heart and take responsibility to the very end to become a company customers can trust,” he said, again apologizing to users.
