Representatives of judges from across South Korea will convene an emergency meeting to address growing concerns over the recent Supreme Court ruling in the case of Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung.

The National Council of Judges announced on May 9 that more than one-fifth of its members requested an emergency session, citing the need to discuss rising doubts about the judiciary’s political neutrality and concerns over public trust in the legal system. Under Article 5, Clause 4 of the Council’s regulations, the chairperson must promptly convene a special session when such a request is made.

"The specific date, location, and agenda of the meeting will be finalized through appropriate procedures," the council said.

The council comprises elected judges from all court levels and serves as a body to express opinions and make recommendations on matters related to judicial administration and judicial independence. It may also request explanations and materials from judicial administrators if necessary.

The controversy stems from the Supreme Court’s recent handling of Lee’s appeal in an election law violation case. On April 22, the case was initially assigned to a small panel but was quickly referred to the full bench, which ruled on May 1 to overturn the previous acquittal and return the case with a guilty interpretation, drawing criticism and allegations of political interference.
