Diverse sectors of society have been calling for Lee Hae-jin, who is serving as chairman of Naver's board, to attend the National Assembly audit with reasonable clarification and possible solutions.
On September 22, Shin Hye-sik, the president of Dongnip Shinmun, criticized, "Naver should act responsibly because of its media power. The opposition camp is protecting Naver 's monopoly because it's favorable to them."
Shin said, "This is why chairman Lee should directly come to the National Assembly audit and clarify the issue sincerely. The National Assembly should also make chairman Lee appear to the audit to talk about responsible ideas."
Byun Hee-jae, head of Media Watch, said, "Chairman Lee never came to the audit despite many requests to testify. I don't know why he's not coming to the audit."
Choi Seung-jae, chairman of Korea Small Business Association representing the interests of 7.5 million small business owners, planned to host a press conference in front of Parliamentary House on September 16 and urge to appoint chairman Lee as a witness at the Assembly audit.
However, the association postponed the press conference and the announcement, anticipating Naver's responsible plans for coexistence.
On September 22, chairman Choi said, "We are currently waiting for Naver's response since they were going to come up with win-win measures for smaller firms and business owners. If Naver doesn't come up with specific measures without sincerity, then they should come to the National Assembly audit for responsible responses. We will make every effort do make it possible."
Jung Jin-wook, chairman of The Ethics Council on Internet and emeritus professor of Sungkyunkwan University, said, "Naver has caused many problems. It's a good idea that chairman Lee come to the National Assembly audit and explain the issues by himself with his own thoughts and ideas."
Back on April, Chung Yong-jin, vice chairman of Shinsegae Group, was fined 15 million won for violating relevant laws on attending parliamentary audits at the request of parliamentarians. Chung Yu-kyung, vice president of Shinsegae Group, was also fined 1 million won for the same cause back in April. Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin was also fined 10 million won in May.
