Anti-social 'dinosaur portal' Naver rushed to fix its search results display after Asia Today report, which revealed Naver's attempt to dominate English vocabulary book related market by placing only its own service on top of its search results page.

On August 22, the Fair Trade Commission revealed that Naver displayed its own service, Naver English vocabulary Mobile Web (m.wordbook.naver.com/endic), as the only link on 'Shortcut' menu on top of Naver search results page when searched for "English vocabulary book" as of August 20. (See Image 1)

Naver provided links to other vocabulary book related services, such as 'Rosetta Stone', 'Play English', 'KSS EDU', 'Gwanggotong', and 'Pagoda Books One Stop Voca', under the 'Power Link' menu, which was below the 'Shortcut menu'.

However, Naver's search results page display changed completely on August 22, the day after Asia Today's feature article "Naver forces users to use its English vocabulary service only?" was covered.

If you search for "English vocabulary book", you will see that "Shortcut" menu for its service has been removed.

Naver also changed the order of the links for other services under the "Power Link" menu. The menu showed 'Forget-me-not vocabulary memorizing', 'Rosetta Stone', Play English', and 'Gwanggotong' in order.

An industry insider claimed, "If Naver deliberately changes its search logic to make its service appear on top of the search results page, many English vocabulary book services, publishers, and small education companies won't survive."

The Fair Trade Commission saw it as abuse of search dominance and decided to crack down.

Noh Dae-Rae, chairman of the Fair Trade Commission, criticized, "Naver's business practice isn't normal. Abusing its search dominance and exposing only its service on top of search page will eliminate competitors."

Jung Jae-Chan, vice chairman of FTC said, "We will strengthen of unfair practices in technology innovation field. We will strengthen monitoring of internet portals (like Naver), servers, software, and more." at the 2013 Korea Sustainability Management Conference held at Seoul Press Center on August 21.
