Small online companies poured out anger onto large portals such as Naver while political parties sharply criticized 'dinosaur' portals such as Naver for taking benefits from "gap" privilege.
On July 23, Saenuri Party, Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning, Fair Trade Commission and other administration and ruling party officials attended "Field meeting for fair and mutually beneficial internet business" to analyze the damage condition of small and medium sized business due to large portals' online market monopoly.
Saenuri Party floor leader Choi Kyung-Hwan said, "Large portals' monopolistic and unfair behavior issue has been constantly controversial. We will make legal improvements by solving the issue hampering online business environment for a better future."
His statement was aimed at NHN CEO Kim Sang-Hun who attended the meeting, signaling a powerful legislative action plan to prevent "dinosaur" portal Naver's tyranny.
Small online companies including 'joara.com' and 'bd119.com' urged to ensure fair trading which was lost due to Naver's excessive market share. Many portal representatives from Daum, SK Communications, and other portals attended the meeting but the majority of damaged companies' criticisms were against Naver.
Humor University representative Lee Jung-Min said, "It is true that search ranking and market share of the company dropped as Naver started the same business content. But I can't explain the reasons to stop Naver from doing the business."
CEO Kim Sang-Hun asked for the floor and said, "If this meeting didn't take place, I wouldn't be able to listen to such vivid comments. Without excuse, it seems like I've been doing wrong."
CEO Kim said, "We didn't start the sale service for the money but for the accuracy of the search. It's not that we are going to do all the business so we will make a difference."
Ruling party floor leader Choi Kyung-Hwan said, "Online publicity issues are related to excessive expansion due to the vertical integration. Dominant portals are hindering other companies' development by taking their contents in the portal market."
CEO Kim said, "In the past, there was a case where a product was not properly provided to consumers. We will discuss carefully in order to coexist with others."
However, CEO Kim nodded silently when an official criticized, "CEO Kim's attitude of the management will have to change."
