On July 18, an interview was held with Lee Chang-Geun, chairman of Trefoil Clover (Internet Gambling Prevention Committee), at Korea Cancer Center Hospital in Seoul. Chairman Lee proudly showed a couple of thank-you letters from victims who survived from the gambling addiction due to his anti-Hangame gambling movement.
Diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer, he stated that he cannot even sleep properly because of pain but Hangame is more terrifying than his cancer.
He said, "For the past few years, I met with numerous victims. All of them were diagnosed with 'Hangame' cancer."
Although chairman Lee is not one of victims of gambling, he decided to conduct anti-Hangame gambling movement after witnessing his friend who was diagnosed with 'Hangame cancer'. After watching his friend addicted to internet gambling and committing suicide in October 2010, he started to investigate Hangame Poker game on his own.
He said, "I wanted to find out what made him do such thing, so I played at Hangame by myself. I found out it had a structure where players lose money eventually due to its fraud characteristic with numerous illegal dealers . I could quickly see why it was gambling that led to addiction."
In February 2011, he witnessed that employers of GPlus, a subsidiary of NHN, being arrested for operating cheating games. He created an internet café, 'Internet Gambling Prevention Committee', on portal Daum and began his anti-Hangame gambling movement at his own expense.
"Even climbing stairs was a challenge to me, but I went to meet Lee In-Jae, Moon Jung-Rim, and nearly 20 assemblymen of Committee on Culture, Sports, and Tourism. I also reported to the press several times."
In January 2012, he filed for an injunction against NHN to ban its gambling operation and sued former Culture Minister Park Kwang-Sik for abetting gambling act. In January 2013, he accused NHN CEO Kim Sang-Hun, Hangame CEO Lee Eun-Sang, and GPlus CEO Kim Geun-Hoe to the Supreme Prosecutors' Office for opening a gambling site, aiding and abetting gambling, and fraud.
However, the activities of Congress members lasted for a while and accusations were all disposed without a proper investigation.
He was even threatened by Hangame gambling officials.
"Every day, I received threatening calls. In October 2011, two unidentified people came to see me and suggested me 600 million won to stop the activity."
Back in January, he was elected as Chairman of Trefoil Clover (Internet Gambling Prevention Committee). He said, "For the past 12 years, illegal gambling in Hangame has been taking place under the mask of 'legal game'. All I can do against 'dinosaur company' NHN is informing the public and government about the dangers of Hangame."
