Kakao Pay has demonstrated a two-way agentic payment technology that goes beyond AI agents making purchases and payments on behalf of individuals, allowing sellers to market data and services directly to AI agents and settle transactions.

Kakao Pay announced on the 15th that it completed a proof of concept (PoC) for both the purchasing and selling functions of agentic payment technology.

Agentic payment operates by allowing users to set conditions, such as purchasing authorization and payment limits, for their AI agents, enabling the AI to autonomously identify necessary goods, services, or data within the designated scope and complete payments. Kakao Pay is developing the technology based on global web payment protocols such as x402.

In this demonstration, the company enabled a user's AI agent to connect to Kakao Pay's digital asset wallet and payment infrastructure to process payments using stablecoins. It linked the entire sequence required for agentic transactions—from wallet integration and payment execution to settlement, balance and limit controls, and agent communication—into a single unified system.

Users can check their AI agent's transaction history, spending limits, and merchants directly within the existing Kakao Pay app. This allows users to oversee where and under what conditions the AI spent funds, even without making payments directly themselves.

Features tailored for sellers were also validated. Under this structure, businesses holding web-based assets, such as APIs or datasets, can receive requests from external AI agents, sell the resources, and settle transactions using stablecoins.

For instance, if a company holding map rating or weather data implements this feature, it can sell data and receive payments directly from AI agents requesting that information.

To help sellers implement the features without complex development processes, Kakao Pay integrated merchant wallets, business accounts, settlement systems, and a dedicated dashboard. Sellers can track sales and settlement records in real time via the dashboard.

Building on this technical demonstration, Kakao Pay plans to reinforce user protection safeguards in alignment with domestic digital asset regulatory policies and move toward commercialization.

Kakao Group is also moving to expand infrastructure for digital assets, including stablecoins. The group previously announced that it validated digital asset wallet technology within Kakao Pay's payment environment and Kakao Bank's banking system, and that it would pursue commercialization by leveraging the relevant technology and regulatory compliance expertise.

Kakao Pay stated, "We have established the technical foundation for two-way agentic commerce, where agents transact with one another without human intervention to maximize benefits for both buyers and sellers," adding, "We will continue building related infrastructure so that digital assets such as stablecoins can be utilized in actual markets."
