Samsung Heavy Industries is showcasing its technological competitiveness in future energy sectors, including floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facilities and gas carriers, at Gastech 2026, the world's largest gas and energy exhibition.

On the 14th, Samsung Heavy Industries announced that key executives, including Vice Chairman and CEO Choi Sung-an and Lee Wang-geun, head of the Shipbuilding & Offshore Business Division, are attending Gastech 2026, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from today through the 17th.

During the event, Samsung Heavy Industries will obtain global classification society approvals for its conceptual design that integrates SENSE, its proprietary natural gas liquefaction system, into FLNG topside facilities.

On the 15th, the shipbuilder is slated to receive Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Lloyd's Register (LR), as well as a Basic Design Verification from ABS. It will also ink a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Gas Entec, a domestic offshore plant engineering firm, for the initial licensing commercialization of SENSE.

An LNG liquefaction system is core equipment that supercools natural gas into a cryogenic liquid state to enable storage and maritime transport. Samsung Heavy Industries plans to broaden its deployment footprint on FLNG units based on its internally developed and validated SENSE technology.

A series of technical approvals for gas carriers will also follow. On the 14th, the company receives approval from the Korean Register (KR) for structural integrity assessment technology applied to large Type-C independent tanks under actual operational conditions. On the 16th, it is scheduled to obtain an AiP from DNV for a composite support structure tailored for storage tanks on very large gas and ammonia carriers (VLGC/VLAC).

Cooperation on LNG ventures with U.S. partners will be bolstered as well. On the 15th, Samsung Heavy Industries will sign a technical service contract with JERA Americas for an offshore floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) project in Hawaii. On the 16th, it will seal an MOU with Fulcrum LNG to target FLNG markets across five global regions.
