Former Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba visited LIG Defense & Aerospace (LIG D&A) during his trip to South Korea. The delegation reviewed major weapons systems, including Cheongung-II, and exchanged views on potential defense industry cooperation between South Korea and Japan.

According to LIG D&A on Sept. 10, Ishiba and Japanese Ambassador to South Korea Koichi Mizushima visited the company’s Pangyo House in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, on Sept. 9. They met CEO Shin Ik-hyun and Park Jong-seong, head of the Future Strategy Division, and reviewed the company’s research and development capabilities and key defense technologies.

At the Pangyo House exhibition hall, Ishiba and his delegation were briefed on LIG D&A’s major business areas, including precision-guided weapons such as Cheongung-II, surveillance and reconnaissance, avionics, space systems and unmanned systems.

The two sides agreed on the need for stronger South Korea-Japan security cooperation amid changes in the Northeast Asian security environment and also exchanged views on ways to expand cooperation between the two countries’ defense industries.

“We welcome the visit by former Prime Minister Ishiba, who has deep expertise in security affairs, and Ambassador Mizushima and his delegation,” Shin said. “It was meaningful to share our advanced R&D capabilities and global competitiveness through this visit.”

“We will continue to provide trusted defense solutions going forward,” he added.
