North Korea has defined U.S.-led regional joint exercises, such as the South Korea-U.S.-Japan "Freedom Edge" and the U.S.-Japan-Australia "Orient Shield," as a "grave security threat," warning that if the U.S. and its allies attempt a new military confrontation, it will take powerful and reflexive countermeasures from a position of strength.

In a late-night statement on the 7th, North Korean Defense Minister Kim Sung-gi said, "The reality that U.S.-led war rehearsals are being successively carried out is a grave security threat pushing the instability on the Korean Peninsula and beyond to its limit," adding, "The most appropriate way to iron-cladly defend our sovereignty and security interests is the continuous application of evolved, new countermeasures."

He warned, "It is the consistent military activity principle of the republic's armed forces not to hesitate in the slightest to fulfill our constitutional duty to deter hostile sources threatening national security and punish provocations, sounding an alarm against the reckless military maneuvering of the U.S. and its follower nations."

Mentioning the First Island Chain—China's defensive line against the U.S. and Washington's military containment line against China in the Asia-Pacific region—Defense Minister Kim also stated, "Under the pretext of militarily deterring neighboring countries, the U.S. is attempting to bring the U.S. Army's Multi-Domain Task Force, a special unit fabricated for this purpose, into South Korea within this year."

"If necessary, we will demonstrate our will and capability to respond to the enemies' maneuvers through more powerful and resolute practical actions," Kim said, hinting at potential provocations in response to future U.S.-led joint military exercises.
