OpenAI announced on the 31st (local time) that ChatGPT ads surpassed 1 billion U.S. dollars (approximately 1.4 trillion won) in annualized revenue less than 200 days after launch.

ChatGPT advertising works by displaying ads while users search for information and make choices within ChatGPT. Relevant ads are displayed based on the current context of the conversation as users choose software, learn foreign languages, or explore home improvement, job searches, and hobbies.

Depending on country and user settings, context derived from a user's broader ChatGPT experience may also be used to personalize advertisements.

Starting on this day, advertisers in India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa can purchase ChatGPT ads directly.

OpenAI views its advertising business as a core pillar of a diversified business model alongside consumer subscriptions, enterprise services, and usage-based APIs. The company explained that providing an ad-supported free tier enables more users to access ChatGPT.

During the expansion of its advertising business, OpenAI emphasized user trust and privacy protection as key principles.

According to OpenAI, ads displayed on ChatGPT are always clearly labeled as advertisements and separated from ChatGPT's responses. Advertisements do not influence ChatGPT's answers, nor do they grant advertisers access to users' private conversations. Users can also manage how their ads are personalized.

ChatGPT advertising is currently available in more than 40 countries through OpenAI's advertising solutions team, agencies, and technology partners.

The advertiser base is expanding as well. OpenAI explained that while it initially operated its advertising business through direct sales, ad agencies, and partners, it has now expanded the ecosystem to more than 50 technology and measurement partners.

Features such as product feeds, platform and geographic targeting, and custom audiences are also provided.

Moving forward, OpenAI plans to expand ChatGPT ads to more countries and introduce additional ad formats, campaign objectives, buying methods, and performance measurement features.

It is also reviewing new advertising methods to enable businesses to interact more naturally with consumers within ChatGPT.

An OpenAI representative said, "More people are using ChatGPT to explore what they need, compare diverse options, and make decisions," adding, "We will support the discovery of products and services while offering growth opportunities to businesses of all sizes."
