Doosan Enerbility has won a contract to manufacture core equipment for TerraPower's small modular reactor (SMR), a next-generation nuclear power project in the U.S.

Doosan Enerbility announced on the 14th that it signed a manufacturing contract with TerraPower for core equipment used in its sodium-cooled reactor. Under the agreement, Doosan Enerbility will manufacture the reactor guard vessel, reactor support structure, and reactor internals, supplying them for the initial project under construction in Kemmerer, Wyoming.

The two companies have been working together since December 2024, when Doosan Enerbility signed a manufacturability review contract for the core equipment of TerraPower's first unit. Since then, the companies have developed and applied design improvements needed for manufacturing, advancing the design to a level ready for production orders.

TerraPower's first nuclear power plant is being built in Kemmerer, Wyoming, featuring a 345MW next-generation reactor — one of the first next-generation nuclear projects in the U.S. to reach commercial-scale construction. Construction began this spring after the project received a construction permit from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

TerraPower's "Natrium" reactor, currently under development, is a Generation IV sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) that uses liquid sodium as a coolant. Combined with a molten salt energy storage system, it can boost power output to as much as 500MW.

Kim Jong-du, president of Doosan Enerbility's Nuclear Power Business Group, said, "This manufacturing contract was made possible by years of close cooperation and trust built with TerraPower," adding, "We will carry out this project without disruption while continuing to strengthen our SMR manufacturing capabilities and expand our role as a global supplier."

Meanwhile, TerraPower founder Bill Gates, chairman of the Gates Foundation, arrived in Korea the previous day. Gates is scheduled to meet with government officials, lawmakers, and business leaders that day to discuss cooperation on SMR projects.
