Samsung Electronics' Medical Devices Business and Samsung Medison are expanding their reach by successively forming strategic partnerships with specialized treatment companies.

On the 5th, Samsung HME America and U.S. radiosurgery company Accuray announced they have signed a non-binding letter of intent to collaborate. The two companies plan to discuss potential collaboration on precision radiation therapy solutions based on volumetric imaging, combining Samsung's mobile CT scanner "BodyTom" with Accuray's robotic radiosurgery platform "CyberKnife."

The partnership is expected to serve as a starting point for delivering precisely calibrated radiation doses using real-time, high-resolution imaging and for shaping a more personalized approach to patient treatment. The two companies are discussing plans to present the direction and technical vision of the collaboration at the American Society for Radiation Oncology's annual meeting in September.

Yoo Kyu-tae, head of Samsung Electronics' Medical Devices Business (and CEO of Samsung Medison), said, "This partnership is part of a core strategy to actively expand the next-generation medical imaging technology Samsung is developing beyond precision diagnostics into precision treatment," adding, "By combining Samsung's next-generation imaging technology with Accuray's expertise in radiosurgery, we will work to realize highly precise, personalized treatment solutions that accurately reflect each patient's anatomical characteristics and changes over the course of treatment."

Samsung had already begun this strategic shift from diagnostics toward treatment in April, when it strengthened its partnership with U.S.-based HistoSonics. The two companies are working to advance precision image-guided treatment by enabling real-time integration between Samsung Medison's premium ultrasound diagnostic device "R20" and HistoSonics' histotripsy treatment system "Edison."
