LS ELECTRIC announced on July 13 that it is joining forces with global semiconductor powerhouse Infineon Technologies to co-develop core direct current (DC) power technologies.

The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for "Cooperation in AI Data Center and Direct Current (DC) Power Technology Development" on July 10 at the LS ELECTRIC R&D Campus in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province. The signing ceremony was attended by key executives from both organizations, including Ahn Gil-young, Executive Vice President and Head of Production and R&BD at LS ELECTRIC; Andreas Weisl, Chief Sales Officer and Senior Vice President of the Industrial & Infrastructure (I2) Division at Infineon Technologies; and Lee Seung-soo, CEO of Infineon Technologies Korea.

The partnership was initiated to address the surging electricity demand triggered by the proliferation of AI data centers and the expansion of renewable energy, while strengthening market competitiveness to build a DC power ecosystem optimized for future grids.

Under this agreement, the two companies will co-develop next-generation power semiconductor-based DC power solutions, including power conversion systems (PCS) for energy storage systems (ESS), solid-state transformers (SST), and solid-state circuit breakers (SSCB). Power semiconductor-based DC power solutions minimize energy loss and enhance system efficiency by reducing the number of power conversion stages. Due to these advantages, they are recognized as a pivotal power technology in ultra-high-density power environments like AI data centers. The partners plan to collaborate on engineering technologies that not only maximize power and voltage conversion efficiency for next-generation DC power systems but also reinforce stability and reliability.

Leveraging its accumulated technical expertise in power systems and industrial automation, LS ELECTRIC will oversee system design, integration, and deployment to actively spearhead commercialization. Infineon Technologies will support the development of high-efficiency, high-performance DC power infrastructure systems by providing its world-class power semiconductors and power control technologies.

"With the spread of AI data centers and next-generation grids, the importance of high-efficiency DC power technology is greater than ever before," said Ahn Gil-young, Executive Vice President of LS ELECTRIC. He added, "Through our collaboration with Infineon, which possesses world-leading power semiconductor technology, we will enhance our competitiveness in core solutions for next-generation DC power infrastructure. We aim to leap forward as a total solution provider leading the global AI data center and future power markets."

Andreas Weisl, Senior Vice President of Infineon Technologies, explained, "High-efficiency DC architecture is a crucial technology to meet skyrocketing energy demands while simultaneously boosting system performance and sustainability. By combining Infineon's power semiconductor expertise with LS ELECTRIC's system integration capabilities, we will further accelerate the development and commercialization of next-generation DC power infrastructure."
