The fourth test launch of South Korea's solid-fuel space launch vehicle, 'Mir,' which was scheduled for the 30th, has been indefinitely postponed.
The Ministry of National Defense announced on this day, "The scheduled test launch of the solid-propellant space launch vehicle was suspended out of safety considerations after some technical issues were discovered during final launch preparations," adding, "The rescheduled launch date will be announced in due course."
Developed entirely with indigenous technology to place military reconnaissance satellites into target orbits, the Mir rocket underwent its first test launch in March 2022, followed by a second in December of the same year, and a third in December 2023. The Agency for Defense Development (ADD) conducted the first two tests at the ADD Comprehensive Test Range and the third test off the coast of Jeju Island.
Although the ministry stated that the rescheduled timeline would be announced later, observers note that a quick turnaround is unlikely given that Jeju Island is entering its annual monsoon season.
Unlike liquid-fuel launch vehicles that require highly complex architectures, solid-fuel rockets feature a simpler design that makes them easier to store and handle. They also offer the distinct advantages of lower costs and rapid launch readiness.
