LG Energy Solution is teaming up with the Korea SMEs and Startups Agency (KOSME) to sharpen the competitive edge of the battery industry ecosystem. The company announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with KOSME for the "Fortification of the K-Battery Ecosystem" at its Daejeon R&D campus in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon.

According to LG Energy Solution on June 24, the two organizations will cooperate on discovering and nurturing promising small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups in the battery sector. Their joint efforts will also focus on running open innovation programs, bolstering the competitiveness of supplier networks, and identifying collaborative projects to revitalize the broader battery industry ecosystem.

Furthermore, the partners plan to leverage KOSME’s diverse growth support programs for suppliers within LG Energy Solution’s supply chain. This initiative aims to enhance corporate competitiveness and establish a sustainable supply chain, with ongoing discussions planned to explore various avenues for cooperation.

"The sustainable growth of the battery industry begins with a healthy industrial ecosystem where large enterprises and SMEs grow together," said Kim Je-young, CTO of LG Energy Solution. "We will further expand our collaboration with promising domestic companies and accelerate their growth to contribute to strengthening the global competitiveness of the K-battery industry."

Barn Jung-sik, executive director of regional innovation at KOSME, also emphasized the potential of the partnership. "KOSME’s corporate infrastructure and support mechanisms will generate powerful synergies with LG Energy Solution’s global value chain," Barn noted. "We will support this initiative to ensure it becomes a model success story for public-private cooperation—offering conglomerates opportunities to secure future innovative technologies, while providing SMEs with a tangible springboard to leap onto the global stage."

Meanwhile, LG Energy Solution and KOSME are already running an open innovation program targeting various areas linked to the future battery industry, such as process innovation, battery diagnostics and forecasting, and next-generation production technologies, to actively scout promising domestic firms with innovative tech capabilities.
