The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on June 5 that South Korea has been elected as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027–2029 term.

According to the ministry, South Korea was elected during the ECOSOC member state elections held at the 80th UN General Assembly in New York on June 4 (local time), marking the country’s 11th time serving as a council member. Within the Asia-Pacific group, South Korea was elected alongside Malaysia and the Maldives.

ECOSOC is one of the UN’s principal bodies overseeing discussions in the economic, social, and development fields. It consists of 54 member states and plays a central role in reviewing the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), coordinating development cooperation and humanitarian assistance, and addressing major international agendas such as health, climate change, and social issues.

The ministry stated, “This election reflects the trust and support of the international community for South Korea’s continued contributions to discussions on key global economic, social, and development agendas, as well as to solving shared challenges. We will continue to make substantive contributions to addressing common challenges that the international community faces.”
