Hyundai Motor Group said its overseas hydrogen fuel cell system production base, HTWO Guangzhou, has been officially recognized as a leading company in China’s local hydrogen industry ecosystem.

The group announced on May 28 that HTWO Guangzhou was selected as a leading enterprise in the hydrogen energy sector through the first-round evaluation conducted by the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology in Guangdong Province.

China designated hydrogen as a key component of its national energy system through its “Mid- to Long-Term Plan for Hydrogen Energy Industry Development” announced in 2022. In line with the policy, the city of Guangzhou has been promoting and fostering leading companies across 14 strategic industries, including new energy and advanced energy storage systems such as hydrogen, smart connected vehicles, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, low-altitude economy and aerospace, and biotechnology.

With the latest designation, HTWO Guangzhou is expected to take a leading role in fostering hydrogen supply chains, building regional industrial ecosystems, expanding cooperation on core technologies and promoting global industry exchanges. The company will also be able to participate directly and indirectly in government policy discussions, industrial planning and applications for major national industrial projects.

Hyundai Motor Group said it plans to further strengthen its presence in China’s hydrogen market while continuing efforts to expand hydrogen technology development and Korea’s hydrogen ecosystem, aiming to secure global competitiveness in the hydrogen industry during what it described as a critical growth period.

Choi Du-ha, general manager of HTWO Guangzhou, said, “This recognition reflects our contribution to the development of Guangzhou’s hydrogen industry and the establishment of a local cooperation ecosystem. Starting in the second half of this year, we will expand participation in China’s comprehensive hydrogen energy application demonstration projects and further strengthen cooperation with local governments and partners.”
