SK Innovation launches AI startup support program

SK Innovation said Sunday that it will launch a new social contribution program aimed at discovering and fostering startups and entrepreneurs developing AI-based solutions for energy and social challenges.

The program, called “AI Impact Solution,” is designed to identify and nurture startup teams that can contribute to solving energy and social problems through artificial intelligence technologies. The initiative is hosted and sponsored by SK Innovation, while impact investment and startup accelerator firm Qnesti will oversee operations.

Ten teams selected for the program will receive support throughout the commercialization process, including funding for proof-of-concept development, mentoring from experts in AI technology, business and impact strategy, commercialization assistance and opportunities for follow-up investment.

Teams recognized for outstanding solutions will receive up to 20 million won ($14,000) in additional commercialization funding.

In the second year of the program, SK Innovation plans to connect participants with the government-backed TIPS startup support initiative under the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, as well as provide opportunities to meet impact investors.

The recruitment process will be divided into two tracks: “AI for Energy” and “AI for Social Issues.” The program will seek ideas addressing issues such as energy accessibility, energy efficiency and carbon reduction, as well as caregiving, safety, environmental protection, mobility rights and education.

Applications are open to individuals or teams of up to five members. Companies and social economy organizations must have been established within the past three years to qualify. Additional consideration will be given to teams that include socially disadvantaged members.

Applications will be accepted through the official website from May 11 to June 12.

An SK Innovation official said AI technology is driving innovation not only in industry but also in solving a wide range of social issues.

“We will provide practical support from idea validation to commercialization so that participants can create meaningful social value,” the official said.
