Samsung Display wins award with tri-fold panel

Samsung Display announced on April 29 that its dual-folding tri-fold panel has won the prestigious “Display of the Year” award from the Society for Information Display (SID).

The award recognizes the most innovative display product introduced in the previous year and is considered the highest honor among SID’s annual Display Industry Awards.

SID praised the tri-fold display as “a new form factor designed for the mobile AI era,” highlighting its ability to deliver both high performance and exceptional portability.

The organization noted that the immersive 10-inch-class large screen opens up new possibilities in productivity, creativity, and entertainment. It also commended the use of advanced materials that enhance durability while maintaining slimness despite the dual-folding structure.

The award ceremony will take place on May 3 at Display Week 2026, the world’s largest display industry exhibition, held in Los Angeles, California.

Samsung Display explained that foldable panels—composed of multiple thin-film layers—can experience slippage between layers when repeatedly folded and unfolded, potentially disrupting vertical alignment.

The tri-fold panel, which features two folding axes within a single display, places greater stress on the structure, requiring highly advanced engineering to ensure durability and performance.

Lee Hojung, Head of Product Planning for Small and Medium-Sized Displays, said, “This award once again validates Samsung Display’s technological leadership in the foldable market.”

He added that by commercializing the world’s first inward-folding multi-fold display, the company has reaffirmed the potential to expand the foldable market through new form factors.

Samsung Display’s latest achievement underscores its continued push to redefine mobile display technology and shape the future of foldable devices.
