HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has secured additional orders for two large container ships, building on momentum from earlier deals this year.

The company announced on April 27 that it recently won orders worth 357.2 billion won from a European shipowner for two 10,100 TEU-class container vessels.

The 10,000 TEU-class vessels are the largest container ships that can be constructed at HJ’s Yeongdo Shipyard in Busan. The design is based on the company’s proprietary eco-friendly 7,700–9,000 TEU container ship platform.

The ships feature high-efficiency, advanced design technologies that expand cargo capacity on both the deck and in cargo holds, while optimizing production efficiency and safety.

HJ Shipbuilding had already secured its first order for a container ship exceeding 10,000 TEU in February, marking a milestone for the Yeongdo facility.

The newly ordered vessels are designed to minimize greenhouse gas emissions and comply with environmental regulations set by the International Maritime Organization.

They will be equipped with scrubbers to reduce sulfur emissions and shore power systems (AMP), allowing ships to draw electricity from land-based grids while docked, reducing air pollution in ports.

With a total of four 10,100 TEU-class ships now secured, HJ Shipbuilding expects to benefit from “repeat construction” effects—where building similar vessels consecutively improves design, procurement, and production efficiency, ultimately enhancing productivity and profitability.

From the shipowner’s perspective, building sister ships also offers advantages in operation and maintenance, increasing their appeal.

The company has also completed development of an LNG dual-fuel propulsion model based on the same vessel design, aiming to meet growing demand for environmentally friendly fuel options.

Yoo Sang-cheol, CEO of HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, said, “With eco-friendly container ships and an efficient design and production system, we are now capable of consecutively building four large container vessels exceeding 10,000 TEU at the Yeongdo Shipyard.”

He added, “We will focus on selective, profitability-driven orders while strengthening our market competitiveness by delivering high-quality vessels on time and building trust with shipowners.”
