President Lee Jae-myung ordered an accelerated construction schedule for the Sejong presidential office on April 14, aiming to begin using the facility within his current term.

According to a briefing by senior presidential secretary Lee Gyu-yeon at the Chunchoogwan press center, President Lee reiterated his intention to hold his retirement ceremony in Sejong, emphasizing the need to expedite the project.

“The president has once again expressed his will to hold his retirement ceremony in Sejong and instructed that construction be carried out swiftly so the office can be used within his term,” Lee said.

The presidential office plans to issue a bid notice on April 15 for site preparation work. The project will cover approximately 350,000 square meters, with a budget of 9.8 billion won and a construction period of 14 months.

The government described the project as a starting point for completing the administrative capital. Lee added that the site development carries symbolic significance for balanced national growth, calling it “the first step in delivering on a promise to the public, not just in plans but through action on the ground.”

Design and construction procedures will proceed simultaneously. The government aims to select the winning design proposal by the end of this month, followed by about one year of design work. Full-scale construction is scheduled to begin in August next year, with a target move-in date set for August 2029.

Discussions are expected to continue regarding the status and functions of the Sejong office. While preparations are underway for it to become the primary workplace, Lee noted that any adjustment to the functions of the current presidential office would require public consensus and legislative processes.
