Meryl Streep, widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of her generation, visited South Korea for the first time in her decades-long career to promote her new film The Devil Wears Prada 2.
Streep appeared at a press conference held on April 8 at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul alongside co-star Anne Hathaway.
Greeting the audience in Korean with “안녕하세요,” Streep said, “This is my first visit to Korea, and I couldn’t contain my excitement when I looked down at the mountains from the plane.”
Hathaway, who previously visited Korea in 2018, expressed her enthusiasm for Korean culture. “I want to visit the Starfield Library and try delicious food, but my stay is too short. Still, I’ll enjoy it as much as I can,” she said.
Set for global release on April 29, the sequel follows the story of Miranda Priestly (Streep), editor-in-chief of the fashion magazine Runway, as she navigates a rapidly changing media landscape. The film also features Andy Sachs (Hathaway), now a veteran editor, and Emily (Emily Blunt), who has become an executive at a luxury brand, as they compete and collaborate in New York’s fashion industry.
Born in 1949, Streep is a Hollywood legend with 21 Academy Award nominations. She has won two Best Actress Oscars—for Sophie’s Choice and The Iron Lady—and one Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Kramer vs. Kramer.

Reflecting on the sequel, Streep said, “The first film was one of the few where male audiences talked about my character. I think they related to Miranda carrying the weight of leadership alone.” She added, “When the first film came out, smartphones didn’t exist. Now that they’ve completely changed journalism and entertainment, I’m curious to see how Miranda survives in this new era.”
When asked about Korean culture, Streep said, “All six of my grandchildren are fans of ‘K-pop Demon Hunters.’ I’d love to promote Korean barbecue more widely—I even have a favorite Korean barbecue restaurant near a hockey arena in Downey, Los Angeles.”
Hathaway added, “Korea is leading global culture, especially in music, fashion, and skincare. I would love to interview directors like Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho.”
After the press conference, the actors received traditional Korean flower shoes reinterpreted as high heels and expressed their gratitude with a respectful bow, drawing attention from attendees.
