K-pop singer Park Bom issued a handwritten statement addressing past controversy surrounding her use of the prescription medication Adderall, insisting that the drug was taken for medical treatment rather than illegal use.
In a message posted on Instagram on March 3, the singer said she wanted to share her “sincere thoughts” with the public. “There is something I want to ask of the public,” she wrote, adding that she had hesitated to speak again about the issue. Park referred to reports that had described Adderall as a psychotropic drug. “That medication is not a narcotic,” she wrote. “I took it for treatment because I have ADHD.” Adderall is commonly prescribed in some countries to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, though it contains amphetamine, which is classified as a controlled substance in South Korea.
In her statement, Park also mentioned YG Entertainment and figures associated with the agency, including founder Yang Hyun-suk, producer Teddy and singer CL. She asked that people not portray her as someone who had used drugs. “Please do not report as if I have used drugs that I have never taken in my 30 years of life,” she wrote.
Park previously faced controversy in October 2010 after customs officials at Incheon International Airport intercepted a package containing 82 Adderall pills sent to South Korea by international mail. Authorities later suspended the case without indictment.
